A man from New Brighton is now facing charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon following an incident where an 18-year-old was allegedly shot in the back last week.
Jonathan Angeles-Sanchez, aged 24, was formally charged on Friday in connection with the shooting, which occurred a day prior, as per court records.
According to the police report, authorities responded to a call around 5 p.m. in a parking lot located in the 300 block of Old Highway 8. Upon arrival, they discovered an 18-year-old lying on his stomach with a gunshot wound in the lower back.
Two witnesses informed the police that they heard a gunshot and then observed an individual wearing a blue hoodie heading towards a nearby trailer park. One of the witnesses stated that the suspect conversed with two other individuals near a white sedan before they departed in the vehicle, while the suspect proceeded into the mobile home park.
Another witness, who did not hear the gunshot, reported seeing two men engaged in a heated discussion on the sidewalk. The witness noted that the victim appeared to be video chatting with someone on his phone, and the individual behind him seemed to have a hand concealed under a hoodie, as if holding a firearm, according to the complaint.
The victim’s mother informed the police of the incident after speaking with her son. The victim disclosed to her that he was shot by someone with whom he had a longstanding conflict, following a livestream on Instagram.
Subsequently, the victim corroborated this information during his conversation with the police, identifying Angeles-Sanchez as the shooter. The victim recounted that the suspect exited a white vehicle and aimed the gun at him, prompting him to turn away, resulting in the gunshot.
Upon searching a trailer associated with Angeles-Sanchez, his mother informed the authorities that he had been present earlier in the afternoon but had left without disclosing his destination. Surveillance footage indicated that Angeles-Sanchez arrived wearing a blue hoodie but departed wearing different attire.
Angeles-Sanchez approached the police around 11:30 p.m. while they were searching his residence and was subsequently arrested, as per the complaint.
