A St. Paul police officer, responding to a burglary in progress, encountered a collision at an intersection on Thursday morning. While driving a marked squad car with lights and siren activated along White Bear Avenue, the officer approached the intersection of White Bear Avenue and Maryland Avenue East, where the traffic light was red. Vehicles at the intersection yielded for the squad car, but as the officer proceeded through, a Toyota Camry traveling eastbound on Maryland Avenue East collided with the squad car in the intersection.
Subsequently, the Toyota Camry struck a Hyundai Sonata that had pulled over for the squad car. The occupants of the Hyundai were assessed at the scene but did not require hospitalization, as per police reports. However, the driver of the Toyota Camry had to be assisted out of the vehicle and transported to the hospital, along with the police officer, both sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities from the St. Paul police department are conducting an investigation into the incident.
