Windows 11 is now available, but if you use an AMD Ryzen CPU, you may want to wait a while before installing because the new OS may cause performance reductions of up to 15% in some situations.
Windows 11 on Ryzen has two major flaws, according to AMD and Microsoft. The first is that Windows 11 might quadruple L3 cache latency. Most impacted apps might see a 3–5% performance decrease, while some games (AMD explicitly mentions those “commonly used for eSports”) could see a 10–15 percent performance decrease.
Windows 11 is also encountering difficulties with AMD’s “preferred core” technology, which tries to move threads to the processor’s fastest core. AMD advises that CPU-intensive workloads may experience performance problems, particularly on CPUs with more than eight cores and a 65W TDP.
AMD and Microsoft have both said that they are “currently researching these known vulnerabilities in the hopes of resolving them via software upgrades.” Both firms guarantee that a Windows update and a software update will be released later this month to address the problems. However, until AMD and Microsoft work out their differences, you might want to remain with Windows 10.
