Walz Declares Peacetime Emergency, Authorizes Minnesota National Guard to Support Flood Operations

Following Saturday’s devastating spring storms, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz proclaimed a state of emergency in northwestern Minnesota.

The Minnesota National Guard is authorized to offer support for emergency flood operations, including troops, equipment, and resources, under the terms of the disaster declaration.

“We stand forward and provide a help when our neighbors are in need,” Walz added. “I am happy that the Minnesota National Guard has stepped up to serve when called upon. The Guard’s assistance will be crucial in protecting Minnesotans’ safety during this difficult time.”

The storm began dumping heavy rains and high gusts on northern Minnesota on Saturday, creating flash flooding across the region. Flooding on Crookston’s Red Lake River has shut down highways and put a fire station and housing development in jeopardy.

The Polk County Sheriff and Emergency Manager have requested that the Minnesota National Guard assist with emergency sandbagging, flood protection system patrols, and probable evacuation operations, according to Walz’s office.
