Gwynnevere Vang, a senior at Tartan High School in Oakdale, has been named a ThreeSixty Journalism Scholar and will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.
Each year, one student from the nonprofit high school journalism program, which attracts students from all around the metro region, is honored. St. Thomas presently has four ThreeSixty Journalism Scholars enrolled.
ThreeSixty Journalistic, which has been based at St. Thomas since 2001, began as the Urban Journalism Workshop at the University of Minnesota in 1971, giving fundamental journalism training to Minnesota high school students, mainly low-income and minority students. The initiative was part of a larger national push to expand the number of people of color in newsrooms in order to better represent and serve increasingly diverse populations. Active partners include the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune.
Vang stated in a written statement that her professional aim is to traverse the country, if not the world, delivering tales about the natural beauty of the planet and environmental causes. She joined ThreeSixty in the summer of 2020 and stayed involved throughout the school year, completing a TV Broadcast Camp and high school journalism classes while also writing to the Plaid Press, her school’s online newspaper.
