Authorities in south-central Minnesota said Sunday that they discovered what they believe to be human remains in a burned-out car on rural Bird Island.
According to a press release, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a death investigation after receiving a complaint of a burned-out car in a drainage ditch approximately a mile west of Bird Island around 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a completely engulfed vehicle in flames in the 81000 block of 370th Street in Bird Island Township. Human remains or what might be them were found inside.
Midwestern Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their death.
Authorities from the Renville County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office are still looking into the incident.
