South Florida cities holding veterans day events to honor those who served

Several cities in South Florida will commemorate and honor those who served in the various branches of the United States military on Friday.

The YMCA of South Florida and the city of Weston hosted their annual Veterans Day breakfast with community leaders to honor local veterans, with a presentation by Dan Cnossen, a former U.S. Navy SEAL lieutenant commander, Harvard University graduate, and six-time Paralympic medalist.

The Veterans Day motorcade in Pembroke Pines began at the Alexander Nininger VA Nursing Home and included Mayor Frank Ortis and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio. Veterans Day ceremonies were held in Veteran’s Park, followed by a procession to Hialeah Fire Station No. 1.

The 14th annual Veterans Day event in Miami Beach started at 11 a.m. on Ocean Drive and 5th Street. Veterans Day was observed in Fort Lauderdale at the Sandy Nininger Statue along the Riverwalk.

The Miami-Dade County Association of Police Chiefs will host a Thanksgiving lunch for veterans at loanDepot park’s west plaza at noon. The event is free for all veterans and current military personnel with identification.
