Six Candidates Compete For 3 Maplewood School Board Seats

Three seats on the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education are up for election, and six community members, including one incumbent, have declared their candidacies.

Johanna Wright will run once more for a three-year seat on the board of nine.

The other five contenders are Regina Eckert of Maplewood, William Gifford III of Maplewood, William Meyer of South Orange, Ritu Pancholy of South Orange, and Nubia DuVall-Wilson of South Orange, according to the Essex County Clerk’s office.

On November 8, voters can select any three.

The nine-member board has three members whose three-year tenure are up for election each year.

The board will vote on matters pertaining to the district public schools and associated programs’ budget, policy, and staff.

Board members have previously faced with contentious topics including how to make the district more inclusive and when to reopen schools during the COVID outbreak.

The jobs have no pay.
