Shepard Fairey Returns to Paint New Mural on Wynwood Walls

Just in time for Art Basel, contemporary artist Shepard Fairey is returning to paint a mural on the Wynwood Walls for the third time.

Fairey flew from Los Angeles to update the renowned walls. In 2009 and 2012, he created two murals in the same location.

“Walls are presented to the top street and graffiti artists in the world, and I am tremendously appreciative,” Fairey said to the media: “This wall has been useful to me three times… I want to create a powerful article to justify the real estate that has been sent my way.”

Fairey is well-known globally for designing the “HOPE” poster for former President Barack Obama’s 2012 election as part of his grassroots campaigning.

“I appreciate that occasionally anything that helps people feel seen or represented may set off a chain reaction, thus I believe the ‘HOPE’ billboard helped many individuals who felt more like spectators in American democracy feel like they could be participants “he added.

Fairey and his crew labored regardless of the weather to make the mural ready for the start of Basel the following week.

The “Future Starts Now” mural update is a tribute to the late real estate entrepreneur Tony Goldman, who turned Miami Beach from a retirement town into an international destination and revived Wynwood into a vibrant artists hub.

“Thus, I have Tony Goldman as a prominent person, as well as Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, Frida Kahlo, and Keith Haring.” “Fairey stated.

The new artwork by Fairey will continue his unique theme of activism and artistic empowerment.

“I feel that art may push people to contemplate subjects they wouldn’t necessarily address otherwise, so initiating a dialogue.”

Eleven new artists who have created one-of-a-kind murals and sculptures were welcomed into the Wynwood Walls 2022 family.
