Prairie Island Nuclear Plant Set to Hold Emergency Drill Tuesday

Together with first responders from other public safety agencies in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety will hold an emergency exercise on Tuesday at Xcel Energy’s Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant.

Along with the city of Red Wing and Pierce County, Wisconsin, the practice, which simulates a nuclear event, will involve the nearby counties of Goodhue and Dakota. Officials with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety advise residents who live close to the facility not to be concerned.

The purpose of the simulation is to evaluate and monitor how prepared local, state, and federal authorities are for an incident at the facility.

According to the DPS, emergency responders, state representatives, and plant managers will practice handling a crisis effectively.
