Police Report, Twin Cities Middle School Teacher Sexually Assaulted 2 Boys

In the Twin Cities metro area, a middle school teacher is accused of sexually assaulting two boys more than 100 times over many years.

Two charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of making pornography with a juvenile are brought against Matthew A. Bertsch, 28, of Richfield. He could spend up to 25 years in jail and pay a $35,000 fine if found guilty.

According to Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges, officers detained Bertsch on the FAIR School campus in Crystal on Tuesday. On a $300,000 bond, he is now being detained at the Hennepin County Jail.

According to Hodges, Bertsch taught at Plymouth Middle School last year.

A father and his two children—now both young adults—provided a walk-in report to a Bloomington police officer on August 3.

According to the criminal complaint, the abuse started while one of them was about 10 and the other was around 11 years old. According to the authorities, Bertsch was 20 years old when the abuse started.

Investigators found that Bertsch assaulted the two kids largely in the basement of their father’s Bloomington house.

The criminal complaint states that there were allegedly more than 100 distinct incidents of mistreatment. The children were abused well into their teenage years, police said.
