A.J. Martin was one of the five victims who were stabbed on the Apple River in Somerset, Wisconsin, on Saturday.
When Nicolae Miu, 52, of Prior Lake, reportedly started stabbing individuals, including Isaac Schuman, 17, of Stillwater, who subsequently died, the 22-year-old Elk River, Minnesota, man was tubing on the river.
Miu was accused on Monday with four charges of attempted homicide and first-degree deliberate homicide. He said he was attacked while looking for a missing smartphone and had to defend himself, according to the investigators.
Rhyley Mattison, 24, of Burnsville, and two 20 and 22-year-old males from Luck, Wisconsin, were also stabbed.
The young man went tubing with friends and their families to celebrate a birthday, according to an online fundraising for Martin.
A GoFundMe campaign reads, “He was stabbed in the abdomen while tubing, resulting in catastrophic injuries that left him in critical condition and required a life flight to the hospital.” He received significant surgery and ICU treatment for his wounds after he arrived at the hospital. It will take a while for him to recuperate because he had a second operation, and his third and hopefully last surgery is set for later this week.
By early Wednesday, more than $8,000 had been collected.
On Wednesday, an online campaign for the Schuman family crossed $37,000, while one that Mattison launched had over $10,000.
