Northern Minnesota resort owner injured and mother killed in fire

After failing to save her mother, who perished in a fire Wednesday night at a houseboat marina on Rainy Lake, the resort owner was flown to a hospital.

Owner of Northernaire Houseboats and critical condition, Vonnette L. Mills, 51, was taken to a trauma center. There were no new developments about her health on Thursday.

According to a press statement from the Koochiching County Emergency Operations Center, the corpse of Lavonne S. Hershberger, 85, was found inside the main office/house by the International Falls Fire Department at about 11:20 p.m.

Additionally, a 12-year-old girl was taken to Rainy Lake Medical Center on Wednesday night and her condition was stable on Thursday.

After being evacuated and receiving treatment for dehydration and heat exhaustion, two firemen were eventually discharged.

The fire was discovered just after 5 o’clock on Wednesday. Around three in the morning on Thursday, firefighters had put out the fire that had been raging all night.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in the Twin Cities will receive Hershberger’s body, according to the press release.

Late on Wednesday, the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Division came to start an investigation. The press statement said that while authorities think the fire was probably unintentional, the investigation is still underway.
