The suspect in the earlier this month shooting inside the Mall of America has been formally lodged in the Cook County Jail.
The Minneapolis-based Shamar Alon Lark, 21, was apprehended on August 12 at around 2:30 p.m. during a traffic check by the Chicago FBI’s Fugitive Task Force. Rashad Jamal May, 23, of Burnsville, was also taken into custody.
According to authorities, the two males were apprehended shortly after leaving a Chicago barbershop. Later that day, according to county jail records, Lark and May were both arrested.
While they are awaiting their return to Minnesota, they are being detained without bond.
Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, has stated that he is ready for their “prompt extradition.”
Walz stated in a statement last week that Minnesotans “deserve to know that persons who conduct brazen crimes like the massacre at the Mall of America will be held accountable by Minnesota prosecutors and courts.”
“To promptly extradite the culprits who escaped to Chicago, I am prepared to take action. We won’t wait to see that these people are brought to justice in Minnesota.”
Two hotel employees are among the five persons who have been detained thus far in relation to the incident on August 4.
Each of Denesh Raghubir, 21, Selena Raghubir, 23, and Delyanie Kwen-Shawn Arnold, 23, is accused of helping a criminal evade capture on one count. They each face a maximum sentence of three years in jail and a $5,000 fine if found guilty.
Gunshots were heard on the west side of the Mall of America on August 4 at around 4:15 p.m., alerting Bloomington police officers who were on patrol there.
According to the criminal allegations, a dispute involving six persons broke out close to the Nike checkout area, leading shoppers to flee.
Authorities claimed the video also showed Lark and May momentarily exiting the shop before Lark came back and opened fire with a revolver.
The criminal allegations allege that at that point, the video showed Lark and May racing east through the mall, through the north doors, and into the IKEA parking lot.
According to data from May’s phone, he made calls to Delyanie Kwen-Shawn Arnold and Denesh Raghubir following the incident. Authorities claim that Arnold then got in touch with Selena Raghubir, his girlfriend. According to the authorities, Selena is an assistant manager at Best Western.
Investigators claim that Denesh picked up Lark and May at IKEA and took them in a Best Western hotel shuttle to the Best Western hotel across from the shopping center.
A car with Selena Raghubir’s license plate was following behind when the shuttle dropped off Lark and May at the hotel’s back entrance, according to the authorities.
Best Western sent a statement through email to Patch that said, “We are extremely grieved by the tragedy that occurred at the Mall of America last week and our prayers are with the Minneapolis community.”
“We endorse the hotel’s decision to quickly fire the staff who were allegedly engaged in this awful incident, keeping in mind that it is independently owned and run. These workers’ actions are in direct opposition to the principles of our brand and the sense of belonging that underpins our family of hotels.”
