Authorities are looking into the discovery of what seem to be human remains in the Florida Keys mangroves.
The remains were discovered Wednesday morning by two persons who were trying to secure a boat close to Mile Marker 5.5, not far from Stock Island, according to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office authorities.
Officials stated that when deputies arrived, they discovered the remains in a makeshift campground along with clothing and food.
The find was not thought to be connected to a vessel that went down on Wednesday not far from Stock Island and had migrants on board. Four migrants, according to officials, swam to Stock Island, but up to 20 others may still be missing.
Tuesday night, Hurricane Ian passed the Florida Keys, bringing with it significant flooding, strong winds that toppled trees, and power outages for thousands of people.
