Birkenhead man who murdered his wife jailed

A man who “brutally” beat his wife to death has been imprisoned.

In May, Mark Wheeler, 52, acknowledged killing his 62-year-old wife at their Birkenhead, Vittoria Close, residence.

Wheeler was “soaked in blood” when she was discovered by her son, who kept her in the apartment until police came, according to Merseyside Police.

At Liverpool Crown Court, Wheeler received a life sentence with a mandatory minimum of 15 years, 4 months.

On May 12, paramedics arrived at the couple’s apartment in Vittoria Court, but Mrs. Wheeler was declared dead there.

David Bradley, the son of Karen Wheeler, stated in a victim statement presented in court that when he went to see her on May 11, “there was no answer and her phone was switched off.”

He continued, “I now realize that Mark had already cruelly murdered my mother.

“I knew Mom was gone when I went the next day and the door finally opened because I saw Mark covered in blood.”

He added that the image of his mother laying there “like that” lingered in his mind and was “present when I close my eyes.”

He remarked, “My mother was the sweetest, loveliest person I’ve ever known, and now, because to him, I doubt I’ll trust another person.”

Det Insp. Phil Ryan stated in a statement following the sentencing that Mrs. Wheeler had experienced a “really horrific and terrible attack.”

Tragically, he claimed, it was her son David who discovered her body and kept Wheeler inside the home until the police came.

“Nobody can even begin to comprehend the impact her abrupt death and the circumstances surrounding it have had on her family and friends.

“Nothing can bring Karen back, but I hope the considerable term Mark Wheeler must now serve will provide them with a feeling of justice and let them finally move on.”
