Arson Probe Opened After Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Fire

Arson is being investigated after a fire at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

Merseyside Police said the “malicious” fire on Mount Pleasant occurred at 06:40 BST on Sunday and damaged doors and the gallery.

The fire did not spread to the main section of the church, and no injuries have been reported.

The fire is being investigated by Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, who say it “could have been a lot worse.”

“Thankfully, the fire did not spread to the main portion of the cathedral,” Det Insp Neil Dillon said, “although there is some smoke damage inside.”

“At the time, nobody was inside the church, and there were no reports of anyone being hurt.”

The cathedral’s spokesperson commended the emergency services for their “quick reaction.”

He stated, “We greatly regret the event that occurred on Sunday morning… and are happy that no one was wounded.”

“The Metropolitan Cathedral’s service schedule has not been disturbed and is continuing as usual.”

Police are asking anybody with knowledge about the fire to contact them.
