22-year-old’s family says he was robbed, fatally shot in St. Paul as he arrived home from work

A 22-year-old man was slain in St. Paul’s North End this week after being attacked as he walked home from work, according to his relatives.

On a website set up to raise money for Alex Becker’s burial costs, his aunt Hidy Hammarsten said, “He was robbed and shot outside his home only a few steps from his door and his mother.”

Tuesday just before midnight, a 911 caller reported shots fired, and police arrived shortly after. According to authorities, they found a shooting victim in the 500 block of West Lawson Avenue, and he passed away there.

According to the police, they are looking into what happened before and who fired the shot. As of Wednesday afternoon, nobody was detained. Anyone with information is urged to contact the family and investigators at 651-266-5650.

His mother, Tara Becker, praised him as “a lovely, sweet, brilliant, kind, industrious, generous guy.” He adored Warcraft 3, D&D, Naruto, Pokémon, and other video games. He dedicated his days to looking after everyone and considering others. He put in a lot of effort at work, and when he wasn’t working, he enjoyed time with his family.

According to Hammarsten, Alex Becker worked for Goodin Co. on Como Avenue. The business is a wholesale distributor of goods for industrial and mechanical pipe systems, residential and commercial plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration.

Becker graduated from Como Park Senior High School in 2019 and participated in the JROTC program (JROTC). He had three younger siblings, and in his spare time he enjoyed playing video games and watching movies with his brothers and sister.

Hammarsten stated, “Never a nasty thing to say about anyone, he really strived to find the good in everyone.

Becker served as a pallbearer on December 19 for his grandpa, who passed away less than a month before. According to Hammarsten, Becker “will be laid to rest while the family struggles to pay for the initial funeral fees.” Please consider making a donation if you are able to, since the family is deeply in mourning during this late Christmas season.
