In a Russian airstrike on the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, where he was seeking medical care for his spouse, an American man was slain. Jim Hill died on Thursday, according to his sister.
“My brother Jimmy Hill was slain in Chernihiv, Ukraine, yesterday. His sister, Cheryl Hill Gordon, said on Facebook that he was waiting in a bread line with many other people when they were “gunned down” by Russian military personnel. “The local police discovered his body on the street.”
Ten people were slain in Chernihiv on Wednesday while waiting in line for bread, according to Ukrainian officials.
The death of an American was verified by Chernihiv police and the US State Department, although he was not identified. After the assassination of journalist and filmmaker Brent Renaud last week, Hill was at least the second American citizen slain in the war.
Hill recalled “indiscriminate bombardment” in a besieged city in sad Facebook messages in the weeks leading up to his death, and joked about wanting to seem “feeble-minded” if arrested by the Russians.
On March 8, he remarked beside a photo of himself, “myself unshaved for 10 days.” In case they catch me, I’m attempting to appear as ancient and feeble-minded as possible. ‘Oh Boy,’ I’m working on my Rainman accent…”
Hill, a native of Eveleth, Minnesota, was a lecturer at institutions in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and Warsaw, Poland. He said that he was in Chernihiv with his partner for medical treatment.
“We’re staying on the third level of the hospital.” The majority of the patients are housed in a bomb shelter in the basement. But it’s chilly down there, and there’s no internet,” he wrote two days after the invasion began on Feb. 26.
“Nobody in Chernihiv is safe,” he added four days later. Bombing indiscriminately… The city is held by Ukrainian forces, although they are besieged. There’s a siege going on here. There is no one inside. “No one is allowed to go.”
According to Viacheslav Chaus, the local governor, at least 53 individuals have been transported to morgues in Chernihiv during the past 24 hours, killed by intensive Russian air assaults and ground fire in Chernihiv.
