Back in October, Nintendo released the “Expansion Pack” for the Switch Online service, which added Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 games to the catalog of playable classic games. The first new addition has been revealed, and it just consists of one game: Paper Mario. On December 10th, it will be accessible.
Paper Mario was the first game in a successful spin-off series using Mario characters and RPG-style turn-based combat, and it was published for the N64 in 2000. Paper Mario: The Origami King, the most current game, was released on the Nintendo Switch last year.
The release of Nintendo’s Expansion Pack was met with significant controversy. Although the $49.99 yearly charge includes a large Animal Crossing expansion, it’s still a significant price increase over the usual $29.99 service, which includes NES and SNES titles, and the quality of the N64 emulation has been questioned. While Paper Mario is a popular game, changing people’s minds about the service by releasing one game at a time seems unlikely.
Nintendo has previously announced the release of a number of future N64 games, including Paper Mario. Banjo-Kazooie, Pokémon Snap, and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask are among the others.
