Ron Gilbert’s April Fools’ hoax turned out to be everything but a joke. He is, in fact, working on a new installment in the iconic Monkey Island adventure game series, dubbed Return to Monkey Island, which is due out this year. The game’s initial trailer may be seen here or at the top of this page.
Return to Monkey Island is a “long-awaited follow-up” to The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, according to the YouTube trailer’s description. Guybrush Threepwood, the protagonist, is back, and he’ll be voiced by Dominic Armato once more.
Return to Monkey Island is being developed by Terrible Toybox, the developer of the 2017 old-school adventure game Thimbleweed Park, in collaboration with Disney-owned Lucasfilm Games, which worked on the first four Monkey Island games under the LucasArts banner, and Devolver Digital, according to the trailer.
The art director is Rex Crowle, who was engaged in the design of some visually appealing games like Tearaway and LittleBigPlanet, implying that the game would have a strong sense of style.
We don’t know much else for now, but you should bookmark the game’s website to keep an eye on future updates. Gilbert made a blog post in 2013 titled “If I Made Another Monkey Island” – might this be a hint as to what we may expect? He also promised that if he ever made another Monkey Island game, he’d reveal it on April 1st of that year.
