According to a message posted by Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, the company will reopen its headquarters and resume business travel on March 15th. In his email (which you can read in full below), Agrawal reiterates previous Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s policy, noting that staff would be free to work remotely full-time if that’s what they’re comfortable with.
While Agrawal claims that he wants Twitter workers to work wherever they “feel most productive and creative” and that the firm is devoted to “truly flexible work,” his statement heavily emphasizes the advantages of working in an office. It acknowledges the challenges of distant work while also noting that “office visits, team meetings, and events all bring that culture to life in such a strong way,” among other things.
This suggests that Twitter’s remote work culture would differ from that of Dropbox, which claimed in 2020 that it will become “virtual first.” According to Dropbox, this means that remote work is the norm, and workplaces are more akin to co-working areas where employees may conduct meetings rather than work alone.
While Twitter appears to be displaying some preference in its messaging, its standards remain more lax than those revealed by some other digital businesses. Amazon, for example, is delegating decisions on work-from-home policies to various teams rather than individual employees. Google and Microsoft have announced that they would be experimenting with hybrid policies in which employees will come to work on certain days but not all.
