Microsoft’s Xbox Backward Compatibility Returns With 76 New Games

Microsoft placed its Xbox backward compatibility effort on hold two years ago, but it’s back today with a final catalog update. Microsoft is releasing 76 new titles to the backward compatibility library today to commemorate Xbox’s 20th anniversary. The whole Max Payne series, Skate 2, Dead or Alive Ultimate, and Star Wars Jedi Knight II are among the shockingly lengthy list of additions.

“The community’s passion and feedback made this latest and last addition of 70+ games to the backwards compatibility program possible,” says Peggy Lo, Xbox’s compatibility program head. “The backwards compatibility team partnered with the original designers to preserve hundreds of games from over four generations of Xbox thanks to [Xbox users’] persistent requests for particular titles and updates.”

On Xbox Series X / S consoles, every original Xbox or Xbox 360 game introduced today will support Auto HDR, and original Xbox games will also receive a resolution bump. Original Xbox titles will be 4x more detailed on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X platforms, 3x more detailed on Xbox Series S consoles, and 2x more detailed on Xbox One S and Xbox One consoles.

On 11 of the titles added today, FPS Boost is enabled, which doubles the original frame rate to 60fps. FPS Boost is now available in 26 backward compatible titles, including the entire Gears of War series, Fallout 3, and Fallout: New Vegas. The whole list of FPS Boost titles can be found right here.

While Microsoft stated two years ago that it had “no plans to add further original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles to the catalog,” the unexpected arrival of more than 70 games marks the end of new backward compatible games. “While we will continue to focus on maintaining and enriching the art form of games,” Peggy Lo notes, “because to licensing, legal, and technological restrictions, we have reached the limit of our capacity to add new games to the catalog from the past.”

Nonetheless, classics like Ridge Racer 6 and TimeSplitters 2 are on the list. Many fans of these oldies may be enticed to buy an Xbox Series X or Series S system just to play them again.

FPS Boost is now available in 33 Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) titles, including Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and The Evil Within 2. The complete list of xCloud enhanced games may be found here.
