According to Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, the firm has begun testing two new feed options, including the much-desired chronological option.
Mosseri showcased a new menu with three settings for how Instagram’s feed would display posts in a video posted today. Users are acquainted with the “Home” setting, which builds a feed based on what Instagram thinks would interest each user, as determined by an algorithm.
A new “Favorites” stream will be filled with content from a user’s selected accounts (Mosseri says he uses it for siblings, certain creators, and friends). Finally, a “Following” feed will provide what many users have requested: a chronological stream of postings from the accounts you follow.
During a Senate subcommittee hearing in December, Mosseri assured that the chronological feed will return. He also revealed Instagram was “already testing the favorites notion” during a Q&A last month.
Since its debut in 2016, people have been critical of Instagram’s algorithmically arranged feed. Users have complained about not seeing posts from accounts they follow for lengthy periods of time or seeing outdated postings at the top of their feeds. Creators have hypothesized on how algorithms choose which material to push to the top, and Mosseri has written blogs describing some of the ways.
The new choices in the Instagram app have already been noted by certain users. When asked when the firm expects the modification to be available to all users, the company did not immediately comment.
