Facebook Will Allow Calls for Violence Against Putin

Users in some countries will be able to advocate for violence against Vladimir Putin and Russian military according to Facebook and Instagram’s owner.

Meta claims it has temporarily created exceptions for some violent remarks that would normally be prohibited, such as “death to the Russian invaders.”

It stresses, however, that appeals for violence against Russian residents would not be tolerated.

Russia retaliated by urging the US to halt the social media giant’s “extremist operations.”

The disclosure came after Reuters reported seeing internal emails describing the policy change.

“In light of the continuing invasion of Ukraine,” a Meta representative informed reporters, “we created a temporary exemption for anyone impacted by the war to express aggressive views toward invading armed forces.”

Users in countries like as Russia, Ukraine, and Poland will be able to ask for the deaths of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko under the new policy.

The emails apparently said that demands for the leaders’ killings would be permitted unless they included other targets, a location, or a method of execution.

The emails apparently said that calls for violence against Russians are permitted provided the message explicitly refers to the invasion of Ukraine.

“We urge that US authorities put an end to Meta’s extremist actions and take steps to prosecute the culprits,” Russia’s embassy in the US tweeted.

“Facebook and Instagram users did not give the platforms’ owners the power to establish the standards of truth and set nations against one another,” it continued.

Last Monday, Russia stated that it will block Facebook and its services, alleging 26 examples of “discrimination” by Facebook against Russian media since October 2020.

While access to the site has been restricted in Russia, it was not totally shut down.

As part of what it calls a “special operation” in Ukraine, Moscow has tightened down on various social media networks.
