If you’re a PC gamer who hasn’t already, head over to the Epic Games Store and get the last edition of the Epic Games Store’s 15 Days of Free Games offer. Instead of giving customers a single game like Shenmue III or Control, the Epic Games Store is offering the full rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy: Tomb Raider Game of the Year Edition, Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition for free.
Adding the titles to your digital library earlier today was more difficult than it should have been due to the store’s persistent server issues following yesterday’s Fortnite outage. It’s unclear whether Epic Titles is still experiencing troubles or whether people simply wanted these games, but everything appears to be working properly again, according to the company’s status page.
Check out the documents that appeared earlier this year as part of Epic Games’ legal dispute with Apple over the App Store if you’re curious how the company can afford to give out games for free. As Tim Sweeney verified on Twitter, the corporation negotiates a fixed cost for the freebies rather than a per-copy fee, resulting in billions of dollars worth of software becoming far less expensive.
We don’t know how much the firm is paying Square Enix to give away the Tomb Raider titles, but a $1.5 million Arkham Trilogy offer in 2019 was a drop in the bucket compared to the money Fortnite pulls in, plus the value of attracting additional people to its games shop.
