Mounds View School District officials accept a check for $92,602 from members of the 621 Foundation. It was class as usual for fourth-grader Kate Provence despite some out-of-the-ordinary seats. Students at Sunnyside Elementary in Matthew Moore's fourth-grade reading class have turned in their stiff-backed chairs for stability balls thanks to a grant from the 621 Foundation. Moore credits the balls with improving posture and concentration in his classes.
A big check, literally
The 621 Foundation awarded nearly $100,000 in grants to the Mounds View School District this academic year. The amount marks the largest donation the nonprofit organization has given the district in its 20-year history.

The foundation's mission is to enhance educational excellence in the school system by providing money for creative and innovative programs and activities that the school district's budget typically cannot support. Through private donations, it serves as an alternative funding source for Mounds View Public Schools.

Here's a list of some of the projects that 621 Foundation money is being used for this year:

• A weather station at Ironale High School

• The annual Physics Fair at Mounds View High School

• A visit to Chippewa Middle School by the Minnesota Planetarium ExploraDome

• A play at Edgewood Middle School

• An African music ensemble at Turtle Lake Elementary

• Books on the Holocaust at Bel Air Elementary

• A garden at Edgewood Middle School

• A traveling art exhibit at Mounds View High School

• A project on India's culture at Island Lake Elementary
