Legion baseball: 39ers run rough shod over Eastsiders

The North St. Paul Post 39 baseball team began the month of July with a “bang” when they visited the Arcade-Phalen Post 577 July 2, for a District IV clash held at Johnson High School.
“It was a good game for us,” understated 39ers head coach Ron Adams. “We were able to take advantage of some of their weaknesses. We got everyone in the game and gained some experience that way. We hit the ball and took advantage of our opportunities. We have to be happy with the outcome.”

39ers lay down suicide bunts to edge Rosetown

A pair of suicide squeeze bunts by the North St. Paul Post 39 helped them achieve a 9-inning, 6-5 triumph over Rosetown Post 542, June 17 in American Legion District IV play at the Rockets home field.
The game was highlighted by a pair of home runs off Rosetown bats and a like number of successful suicide squeeze bunts by the 39ers.
Those exploits were punctuated by a couple of highly questionable calls — particularly at home plate — by the umpires.

They’ll be flying again

The people look like ants from up there too; the Copper Peak Ski Flying complex is the only ski flying hill in North or South America. That’s Lake Superior in the background. (photo by Keith L. Anderson, Montreal, Wisc., from WLUC-TV website uppermichiganssource.com)

It’s been 20 years since last they “flew” at Copper Peak It doesn’t seem that long ago.
Actually it seems like yesterday that I sat on a stool just inside a door and watched the ski jumping world pass by on their way into a banquet.
The year was 1970 and just about anyone I knew in that world of ski jumpers was in Ironwood, Mich. They had gathered to witness the first ski flying event ever held in the Western Hemisphere.

Legion baseball: Lady Luck and huge error give 39ers win over Arcade-Phalen

The Arcade-Phalen Post 577 Eastsiders and pitcher Brandon Langer probably deserved a better fate in an American Legion baseball game played June 13 at Kuenkel Field.
Through the first five and a half innings, the Eastsiders were on top of a 2-0 lead.

Legion baseball: 39ers open season with a loss to Purple Hawks

The opening of District IV American Legion baseball for both the North St. Paul Post 39 39ers and the Hamline Post 418 Purple Hawks was a tight, no-hit affair until just past the mid-mark of the seven inning.
Eli Wright of the Purple Hawks and Sam Shipstad of the 39ers were locked in a pitchers’ duel in which neither team had a hit, or a run, until the fifth inning at the Cretin-Derham Hall field June 10.
