New Brighton mechanics sniff out, save dogs from fire


Solomon Gustavo • Mechanics Paul Hetland and Justin Crow, who work at The Garage of New Brighton, followed smoke they saw coming into their shop on Aug. 20 to a burning house. Told there were two dogs trapped inside, they broke down a door and rescued the pets.

The New Brighton Department of Public Safety extinguished a city house fire the morning of Aug.

New boss in St. Anthony-New Brighton School District


submitted photo • New St. Anthony-New Brighton Schools Superintendent Dr. Renee Corneille, who started in the position July 1, spent time recently with 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds attending a soccer camp at Central Park in St. Anthony.

Concluding nearly 40 years in education, St. Anthony-New Brighton Schools Superintendent Robert Laney retired June 30.

On July 1, Dr. Renee Corneille became the new superintendent.

Mounds View is turning 60


file photo • Mounds View turns 60 years old this year and a celebration of the city’s six decades is Friday, Aug. 17 at City Hall.

This year marks the 60th since Mounds View was incorporated as a village in 1958. 

Mayor Carol Mueller said the city she heads is a wonderful place in which to work and play.

New Brighton OKs Pike Lake Kindergarten construction


Solomon Gustavo • At its July 24 meeting, the New Brighton City Council approved construction at the Pike Lake Kindergarten Center on 14th Street in New Brighton. Construction of two classrooms on the back of the building along the parking lot, the area seen above, is set to begin this fall and finish next summer. The project is funded by the $165 million Mounds View School District building bond referendum that passed in November.

Many New Brighton school-aged residents are funneled into the growing Mounds View School District.

Ralph Reeder Food Shelf moves


Solomon Gustavo • Ralph Reeder Food Shelf volunteers Carol Leighow, Mary Farquhar and Roger Fisher — all of Shoreview — took a break from stocking shelves July 16 at the new home of the food shelf on Mounds View Boulevard in Mounds View.

After years of using extra space at Pike Lake Kindergarten in New Brighton, Ralph Reeder Food Shelf has moved to a place of its own.
