Experience should help Mounds View at state hockey tournament

Bella Sutton admitted that two years ago when the Mounds View High School girls hockey team made it to the state tournament, there was a “wide eyed” factor that affected the team. The Mustangs are back at state and Sutton is confident the big eyes won’t show up this time around.
At least a half-dozen members of this year’s squad played in the state tournament back in 2012. They will be counted on to lead the newcomers when the Mustangs take the ice at the Xcel Energy Center on Thursday evening.

Irondale’s Watts brings home state gold

It has been a busy but successful winter for Irondale High School senior Mattie Watts. Her Nordic skiing prowess took her to Europe recently and last week earned her the biggest prize in prep skiing.
Watts won the state Nordic individual championship on Thursday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. A 23-second lead following the freestyle leg of the competition gave Watts enough of a cushion that she survived a fall in the classic race.

Pair of upsets sends Mustangs to state

Being the No. 1 seed in Section 5AA for girls hockey is not all its cracked up to be. At least it hasn’t been in recent years.
For the third consecutive season, the Section 5AA champion has been someone other than the top-seeded team. Third-seeded Mounds View sprung a pair of upsets last week to claim the section crown and a trip to the state tournament.
