Four reasons to keep your MNsure account up to date and stay on top of your coverage

Don’t wait until open enrollment to report changes

With just under three months until the start of MNsure’s seventh open enrollment period, it is important that enrollees ensure their account is up to date and accurate.

“If you have insurance purchased through MNsure and you’ve recently moved, had a baby, or gotten married – congratulations. The next step is to let us know,” said Nate Clark, MNsure CEO. “Reporting changes as they happen is important. It ensures you’re getting the right amount of advanced premium tax credits if your income or family size changes, or that you’re receiving mailed notices from MNsure or your insurer if you moved.”

Here are four reasons why MNsure enrollees should keep their account up to date.

1. In most cases, you only have 60 days from when a life event occurs to qualify for a special enrollment period and change plans or enroll in coverage.

Examples of qualifying life events: change in household size due to birth or marriage, moving to Minnesota or to a new county within Minnesota, or loss of health insurance.  A comprehensive list can be found online at

2. Life events can affect the tax credits you may be eligible for.

Your premium tax credit is calculated based on your projected household income, family composition for the year and certain other information. When you file your tax return at the end of the year, the Internal Revenue Service determines the final amount of tax credit you qualify for based on the actual income you received during the year. If you’ve taken more premium tax credit than you’re due based on your actual income, you may have to pay back the excess when you file your federal tax return.

3. Outdated mailing addresses could mean you aren’t receiving important notices.

Not all MNsure notices are available on your online dashboard. Don’t miss pertinent information about renewing your coverage for next year. Make sure MNsure has your up-to-date contact information.

4. Your plan might not be available if you have moved to a different area .

If you’ve made a permanent move to a new ZIP code or county in Minnesota, your plan options may have changed. Health insurance company and plan availability varies across the state.

Account updates should be reported to the MNsure Contact Center by calling 651-539-2099 (855-366-7873 outside the Twin Cities).
