LETTER: Workforce scholarships in Minnesota State system

To the Editor:

Minnesotans deserve the opportunity to access an affordable, quality post-secondary education to help advance their careers, support their families and enhance their livelihoods. As chair of the House Higher Education Finance and Policy Division, I’m working with my colleagues on solutions we can enact at the Legislature to make college more affordable. For too many students, college isn’t an option without financial assistance.

With back-to-school season just around the corner, I would like to share news of an exciting opportunity for first-time or returning college students attending any of 30 colleges in the Minnesota State system. Students are encouraged to apply for a workforce development scholarship worth $2,500 or more. We included a $7 million investment for these scholarships in our Higher Education Bill.

The scholarships are available for students pursuing the following career fields facing workforce shortages: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, health care services, information technology, early childhood education and transportation.

These scholarships can help address Minnesota’s worker shortage, in addition to providing opportunities to students to tap into their full potential. It’s a win-win for Minnesotans and our economy.

If you know anyone who could benefit from scholarships, they can contact their admissions or financial aid office at any Minnesota State college to learn more. If you have any questions, please contact me at 651-296-5510 or at rep.connie.bernardy@house.mn and I would be happy to see how I can be of help.
