LETTER: Join Minnesota Reading Corps and help students

To the Editor:

As of Dec. 1, 449 students have received individualized reading support by Minnesota Reading Corps Scholar Coaches. For students with six or more weeks of tutoring, 80 percent are at or above their target growth, showing significant improvements since the beginning of the school year. While these are just numbers, the impact of serving in Minnesota Reading Corps goes far deeper. Minnesota has one of the largest achievement gaps between white students and students of color, with many not receiving the individual support they need to realize their full potential and catch up to their peers.

My decision to serve stemmed from the understanding that if enough people worked together, we could close the achievement gap over time. As this gap decreases, opportunities will increase, reflecting the power of a more equitable education system that meets the needs of all students.

Serving in Reading Corps is an opportunity to build strong communities, and is a chance to immerse yourself in a school culture, cultivate interpersonal skills and make lasting impressions on the children who depend on us.

Minnesota Reading Corps is looking for members to join in this mission of creating a better future for our students, communities and Minnesota at large. Reading Corps welcomes individuals of all ages and backgrounds to consider one year of service that will result in many years of success for our students.

I encourage anyone who is interested in tutoring to visit www.minnesotareadingcorps.org and discover if Reading Corps is right for you.
