Review area House races: DFLers reign

Each available Minnesota House seat in the Review coverage areas of Lake Elmo, Maplewood, North St. Paul and Oakdale was won by a DFL candidate on Nov. 6, following a nationwide state house trend.

District 43A

The District 43A seat — which covers Maplewood precincts 1-9, White Bear Lake precincts 3-5, Mahtomedi and Willernie — was won by incumbent DFL Rep. Peter Fischer, over GOP candidate Robert “Bob” Cardinal.

Fisher won with room to spare, receiving 61 percent of the vote.

In an interview, Fischer said the difference was made through the hard work of getting out and meeting people in the district.

“I’m humbled,” he said, adding he’s thankful for the support.

District 39B

In District 39B, which includes Lake Elmo, West Lakeland Township, Lakeland, Lake St. Croix Beach, St. Mary’s Point, Grant, Oak Park Heights and the eastern section of Stillwater, the margin of victory was razor thin.

DFLer Shelly Christensen won the seat by fewer than 200 votes over GOP incumbent Rep. Kathy Lohmer.

Christensen received 11,372 votes, which was good for 50 percent of the vote. Lohmer, who is finishing out her fourth term, trailed just behind with 11,235.

District 53A

DFL Rep. JoAnn Ward announced she would not run again for District 53A, which is made up of Landfall, Oakdale south of 10th Street, most of south Maplewood, and the northeast section of Woodbury, making for a wide open race.

Running in her stead was DFLer and current Maplewood City Council member Tou Xiong, who won the seat with 61 percent of the vote over Republican Andy Turonie.

“From the [Republican] party perspective, it’s disappointing,” said Turonie.

District 43B

DFL incumbent Leon Lillie received 62 percent of the vote and was re-elected to his eighth term representing District 43B, which covers North St. Paul, Oakdale north of 10th Street and Maplewood precincts 10 and 11.

Lillie is the brother of Lillie Suburban Newspapers publisher Ted Lillie.

GOP challenger Rachel Buchholz earned 37 percent of the vote and had her eyes set firmly on the future speaking the day after the election.

Said Buchholz, “I’ve let Leon Lillie know — we’ve got a rematch in 2020.”
