Volunteering, good for the mind and soul

Through volunteering, people can enhance their well-being, extend their life and make new friends. That is why the Oakdale Wellness 50+ team, which offers health-focused activities for people aged 50 and older, is hosting an event from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Oakdale Discovery Center, 4444 Hadley Ave. N. Participants will be able to explore their passions and their volunteering options, while they meet speakers, including Steve Martin, volunteer extraordinaire, and others who will help them find new opportunities. Refreshments will also be available. Please register by calling 651-747-3860 or visiting www.oakdalefun.com.

Katharine Tighe and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s big break

Though her name is found mostly in footnotes, and is frequently misspelled, Katharine Tighe Fessenden of White Bear Lake was one of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s oldest friends. Her girlhood summers were spent in Dellwood and on Manitou Island. Local historian Mary Jane LaVigne will be presenting on this little-known sidelight on a great author’s past. The presentation will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, at the White Bear Lake Library, 2150 Second St., White Bear Lake. This event is free and open to the public without pre-registration.

Ink art for teens

Teen participants of all artistic abilities will learn alcohol ink techniques to create a ceramic tile or small jewelry plate for their room or for a gift. Ink is diluted with rubbing alcohol and can be splattered, dripped, brushed, stamped or air blown. This event, held Friday, Sept. 28, from 3 to 4 p.m. is for youth ages 11 and up, and registration is required. Register online at WashCoLib.org/Events, by phone at 651-730-0504 or in person at the Oakdale Library, 1010 Heron Ave. N.
