Friends of Lake Elmo Library donate funds to Lake Elmo Elementary

submitted • Members of the Friends of Lake Elmo Library Board of Directors surround Lake Elmo Elementary School media specialist Kari Phillips and Principal Stephen Gorde as they present a check for $1,500 to support the school’s collection of books in Spanish and English.

Friends of Lake Elmo Library donated $1,500 to Lake Elmo Elementary School to develop a library, or “biblioteca” of both fiction and nonfiction books in Spanish to support the school’s Spanish Language Immersion program that is being offered to kindergarteners and first graders in the 2018-2019 school year.

“The Spanish immersion program helps the students develop high levels of language proficiency in both Spanish and English,” said Lake Elmo Elementary media specialist Kari Phillips, “and they demonstrate high levels of academic achievement in all subject areas.”

The funds will also give the school resources to update their collection of popular fiction and nonfiction books in English, for a much-needed collection boost for their large and diverse student body.

“A donation to the school’s library fits so well with our mission of promoting literacy in our community,” said Roger Kapsner, president of Friends of Lake Elmo Library.  “If it helps the children in our community become well-read both at home and in school, we are proud to support it.”
