NEWSBRIEF: Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf launches new program

Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf will launch a new program on Aug. 15 to provide access to the community’s excess food.

Called Wildcard Wednesday, this new initiative in coordination with area grocers and Second Harvest Heartland, gathers fresh produce, dairy and meat inventory that are beyond the grocers’ business needs. Volunteers at CCEFS will receive, sort and display this community abundance at their facility and welcome anyone that wants to come in and share in the bounty.

Starting Aug. 15, the Wildcard Wednesday program will run every week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CCEFS’s Oakdale facility located at 8264 Fourth St. N.

This new service is in addition to its regular service hours and food support programs. Anyone is welcome to come and select from a variety of groceries and can participate every Wednesday if they would like. The available selection of food will vary from week to week, hence the “Wildcard” aspect.

“We are excited to bring this new program to the community we serve,” said Greig Metzger, Executive Director for CCEFS. “We are fortunate to live in a community where there are a large variety of grocery options. This choice comes with a potential cost of higher food waste. We believe that in working with our partners, we can eliminate food waste while distributing this excess to our neighbors. It is a win-win for all.”
