West St. Paul Target to get a liquor store

After little discussion at its June 25 meeting, the West St. Paul City Council unanimously cleared the way for a new liquor store in town.

Jim Hartshorn, community development director, said Target Corporation was requesting a conditional use permit to allow the addition of an off-sale liquor store to its West St. Paul location.

The move is part of a nationwide initiative by Target, which is looking to expand its services and brand, Hartshorn said. On top of its existing eight liquor stores in the metro area, Target is slated to add 10 additional liquor stores as it remodels its stores in the Twin Cities.

“They’re basically swapping out the food courts, which apparently aren’t doing so well, with the liquor stores,” Hartshorn said.

The planning commission voted to recommend approval of the permit.

Target still will need to apply for and maintain a valid liquor license with the city.
