Mounds View resident Erik Beckler was named local Jr. NBA Coach of the Year. Beckler is a coach with the Mounds View Basketball Association. He was recognized with a trophy and ceremony at the Minnesota Timberwolves’ final regular season game on April 11. According to his bio, Beckler, a former Hamline University basketball player, has coached over a decade at all youth levels. His philosophy is to instill players with the pillars of love, respect, service and fun, and he starts each season by telling the team “you have my unconditional love.” Local NBA and WNBA teams select a local winner for a chance to be named one of three national Coach of the Year finalists. Finalists are awarded a $2,500 grant to support each coach’s youth organization and an all-expense paid trip to Chicago for the Jr. NBA Leadership Conference, where the national winner is announced. The national winner receives an additional $2,500 grant for a total of $5,000 for their youth organization.

National finalists will be announced in May.
