Woman injured in crash with boy driving a stolen truck in Inver Grove Heights

Police had chased the stolen vehicle just prior to the crash

A 15-year-old boy driving a stolen truck crashed into a woman and her infant child in their SUV Feb. 22 in Inver Grove Heights, after police chased the stolen truck.

The woman was seriously injured though the child was not.

According to a police press release, a vehicle stolen around 6:15 a.m. on Feb. 22 at a gas station and convenience store in Eagan was located hours later in Inver Grove Heights.

Inver Grove Heights officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled. Officers initiated a pursuit that ended up on Highway 55. It was ended when the stolen vehicle began going the wrong way on the highway, traveling northbound in the southbound land. After officers lost sight of the vehicle, an officer not involved in the pursuit came upon a crash at the intersection of 80th Street and Barnes Avenue. Witnesses told the officer that several people had fled on foot from one of the vehicles, which was determined to be the stolen vehicle from the chase earlier.

According to the release, the stolen vehicle crashed into a small SUV driven by a woman that also contained an infant in a car seat. While the infant did not appear to have any injures, the woman suffered serious injuries and required extraction from the vehicle. Both mother and child were transported to Regions Hospital, where the mother's injuries were determined to be serious but not life threatening.

The stolen vehicle, a late model pickup truck, was being driven by a 15-year-old boy from Sioux Falls, South Dakota -- there were five other juveniles from Sioux Falls who are believed to be runaways in the truck. The driver of the vehicle suffered no injuries and was arrested. Four of the other occupants required transport to the hospital for injuries that included bruises, broken bones, lacerations and contusions. The fifth occupant was transported to a local juvenile shelter and was awaiting his parents.

The 15-year-old driver is being booked at the Dakota County Juvenile Detention Center on probable cause charges of criminal vehicular operation, fleeing police in a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property, the release said. Formal charges are pending.

Inver Grove Heights and Eagan police investigators are coordinating the investigation. The Minnesota State Patrol is doing a crash reconstruction.
