Inquiring Minds: Does the library appraise books?

Q. I have some old books that I inherited when my parents died. How can I tell if they are valuable? Can you appraise them for me?0

A. Unfortunately, librarians are not rare book experts in most cases. We can help you find information in databases like, which will show you what prices used book dealers may be asking for books similar to the ones you have inherited. For expert advice and formal appraisals, you could consult one of several antiquarian bookdealers in our area. At the library, we can also help you locate names of local bookdealers that might be willing to give you a professional opinion on your inherited items.
