New Subaru dealership coming to South St. Paul

submitted graphic • The current Walser reconditioning center at 740 Concord St. S. in West St. Paul will be torn down and a Subaru dealership will be built at the site. The South St. Paul City Council cleared the way for the change with its Jan. 16 approval of a conditional use permit.

On Jan. 16. the South St. Paul City Council approved a conditional use permit and sign variances that will allow for a new Walser Subaru dealership to be built.

Peter Hellegers, city planner, said the dealership would be located at 740 Concord St. S. The location has been used by the automotive industry for years and is currently a Walser reconditioning center, which will be relocated to Eagan.

Walser plans to put a brand new dealership in the same place of the existing building.

Hellegers said the new structure would be roughly twice as long as the current building; this will be done by combining two parcels to create a 10.2-acre property at the intersection of Concord Street and Interstate 494.

The variances related to the number of signs and the size of the signs on the property. Other dealerships in the city also have signage variances and the Planning Commission recommended their approval.

Hellegers said city staff is excited to see if the new dealership will attract other businesses into the area.

Council member Tom Seaberg said Walser is a good business.

“I think this is a logical progression for that site off of 494,” he said.

Seaberg said he was worried about traffic off the intersection of Villaume Avenue and Concord Street, especially coming from Woog Arena, and that he’s anticipating there to be more traffic with the coming dealership

Council member Lori Hansen said Walser has long intended to build a dealership on the property, something that is only coming to fruition now.

The council voted unanimously to approve the permit and variances, with council member Marilyn Rothecker absent that night.
