East Side teachers nominated for 2018 Minnesota Teacher of the Year

A near-record 167 teachers have been nominated for the 2018 Minnesota Teacher of the Year award, as announced Jan. 18.

Among the candidates are four teachers from East Side schools: Joe Gwin, Jenna Harrison, Justin Hudalla and Molly Keenan.

Candidates include pre-k through 12th-grade and Adult Basic Education teachers from public and private schools.

Gwin is an algebra teacher at Battle Creek Middle School, who is in his 23rd year of teaching.

Harrison teaches first through third grade at the Nokomis Montessori Magnet School’s north campus.

Hudalla also teaches at Battle Creek Middle School. This is his seventh year teaching and he teaches eighth grade global studies.

Keenan teaches social studies at Harding High School and has been teaching since 2002. She is also an advisor to Dare 2 Be REAL and serves as a 12th grade advisor.

In the next few months a 25-member panel of community leaders will name a group of semifinalists and then finalists.

The Teacher of the Year award is organized by Education Minnesota, the Minnesota teacher’s union.
