LETTER: Keep Hillcrest Golf Course as greenspace

To the Editor:

My name is Fred and I live right down the street from the Hillcrest Golf Course. The course is a beautiful amount of greenspace nestled on the East Side of St. Paul.

I love walking by the oasis of a golf course on my way to my grandma and grandpa’s house. We are both very lucky to live in a quiet neighborhood down the block from the course. Sometimes I find golf balls that are on the side of the course. We have a large collection.

I’m apprehensive as to what it will become. If it gets paved over and they put roads there, the traffic will increase. One of the things I love to do is rollerblade down our street. With new roads bringing new traffic it will be unsafe to rollerblade down the street.

I understand that the golf course is closing but I wish someone would buy it and make a new course out of it and open it up to the public for everyone to enjoy. The beauty of the land is something that in the city we need to see. If it does close, I hope St. Paul finds a way to keep the green space. Maybe a really big dog park? We love the open space in this community. The greenspace has always been there and I hope it will stay for future generations to enjoy.

Frederick Heaser, St. Paul
