DARTS to Launch Memory Café in Hastings

DARTS, a community-based nonprofit serving seniors and their families in and around Dakota County, will launch a new Memory Café in Hastings starting Sept. 12 .The Memory Café meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Break Away Café from 10:30 am to noon. Support from the United Way of Hastings and Break Away Café help provide this service free to the public.

Those affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia are encouraged to come with a friend, family member or spouse to feel less stress about being active in the community. Memory Café activities are tailored to the individual group; many play games, do crafts or merely enjoy conversation and coffee.

Tabatha Barrett, director of social services at DARTS, described the Memory Café as an opportunity to fill a need for caregivers.

“When you have memory loss or are caring for someone with memory loss, outings can be very challenging. Our Memory Café at Break Away Café will provide a comfortable space to connect with others in the community.”

Knowing the impact of isolation that often accompanies caregivers, DARTS is adding services to address those needs.

One of many sources to find Memory Cafés nearby is memorycafedictonary.com. For those interested in the Hastings Memory Café or have further questions, please contact Tabatha Barrett at tabatha.barrett@darts1.org.
