RAHS seeks nominations for new athletic hall of fame

Roseville Area High School is now seeking nominations for its new Roseville Athletic Hall of Fame.

Whether the first hall of fame class will feature former RAHS standouts like Stanley Cup winner Chris McAlpine — class of 1990 — or more recent grads like the NBA’s Mike Muscala or U.S. women’s Olympic hockey silver medalist Lee Stecklein is yet to be seen.

Whoever ends up in the first class, RAHS Activities Director Jeff Whisler, the main force behind the hall of fame, said there will be plenty of athletes to choose from.

“A school of this rich tradition, with Roseville Area High School and the combination of Alexander Ramsey and Frank B. Kellogg — there’s a lot of tradition at these three schools,” Whisler said.

Alexander Ramsey High School and Frank B. Kellogg High School were merged in 1986 to form RAHS; athletes, coaches or community members with ties to all three schools are eligible for the hall of fame.

The first hall of fame class will be honored at RAHS’ 2017 homecoming football game on Oct. 13 — Whisler said he hopes at least some of the honorees will be able to make it to the game.

Whisler said the hall of fame will start with plaques in the main hallway by the upper gym, by the other RAHS athletic trophies displayed at the school.

“That’s not to say it can’t grow to have a letterman’s jacket from each school present, or some memorabilia from each school,” Whisler added.

The first hall of fame class will be selected by the Hall of Fame Committee. Whisler said the seven-member committee is already in place, made up of former and current District 623 coaches and staff, along with community members. Whisler is a non-voting member of the committee.

Nominations to the Roseville Athletic Hall of Fame can be made online or with a paper application now through July 14.

To nominate a former athlete, coach or a community member who deserves recognition for their contributions to Roseville area athletics, go to www.isd623.org/halloffame or the Roseville Area High School Activities Office. The school is located at 1240 County Road B2.

“We have so many potential candidates,” Whisler said. “We just hope the word gets out there so we get a good base and get a good start with the first year for the hall of fame.”
