RAHS wrestling off to a fast start

Ramesh Upreti

Tamir Beeler

Alex LaPierre

The Roseville Area High School wrestling team opened the first week of competition with a busy schedule. The Raiders wrestled seven dual matches in two days and finished 6-1.

Roseville head coach Mike Holmes feels his team is strong at enough weights to compete with teams of similar ability. The Raiders don’t quite have the depth throughout the lineup to hang with the more elite programs.

“Because we’re tough and deep in the middle weights but young and thin in the uppers and lowers, we expect to compete with the other average teams but it will be hard to beat the better teams,” Holmes said.

Holmes also believes the Raiders can finish at or above .500 overall and in the Suburban East Conference.

Roseville’s top wrestlers so far this season appear to be seniors Ramesh Upreti, Tamir Beeler and Alex LaPierre. Beeler and LaPierre are co-captains.

Upreti and Beeler both finished fourth at individual sections last season. LaPierre missed most of 2015-16 due to injury.

Other Raiders to watch include juniors Miguel Urriola and Payton Nelson, both of whom wrestle at 145 pounds.

“Almost two-thirds of the team is underclassmen but we’ve got a lot of athletes in that group,” said Holmes, who is in his 18th season as Roseville’s head coach. “Most should be able to hold their own.”

All six of Roseville’s victories in the opening weekend were of the come-from-behind variety. The Raiders opened with a triangular at Champlin Park on Dec. 2 and they beat both the host Rebels and Irondale.

The next day, Roseville ventured a few miles down Highway 36 to Rice Street for a dual event at Washington Technology Magnet School. The Raiders went 4-1 with wins over Washington, North Branch, Minneapolis South and Eden Prairie, and a loss to Goodhue, which is a top-15 Class A team.

Against Eden Prairie, the back-and-forth match came down to the heavyweight bout. Roseville sophomore Will Peterson pulled out the win to give his team the dual victory.

Roseville has two events on the docket this week, starting with a Suburban East Conference dual at Park-Cottage Grove on Dec. 15. The Raiders then head to Richfield for a tournament on Dec. 15.

The final event of 2016 for Roseville is a home triangular on Dec. 21 with East Ridge and St. Paul Harding.
