St. Anthony girls basketball looks to build on late-season surge

After winning only two of its first 14 games a season ago, the St. Anthony Village High School girls basketball team went 8-3 over its final 11 regular-season games. The Huskies return five regulars from last year’s team and are ready to make some noise in the conference and section.

Despite the second-half turnaround, St. Anthony still finished below .500 last season. The Huskies are looking to post a winning record for the first time since 2013.

Among St. Anthony’s returning players is senior Bonnie Zeller, who appeared in every game last season and averaged 10.4 points per game.

Also back are seniors Nicole Zielsdorf, Tori Thomas and Abbey Koenig-Meehan, all of whom played in at least 20 games. Kalli Wiebusch, another senior, also returns after averaging nearly 10 points per game in 13 contests.

St. Anthony head coach Mary Jo Hadler sees a team that is bigger, stronger and faster and that can contend in both the Tri-Metro Conference and Section 4AAA.

“The (Tri-Metro) East Conference favorite will be St. Croix (Lutheran) and we should match up well with them,” Hadler said.

St. Croix Lutheran won 23 games and advanced to the championship game in its section last year.

In addition to the aforementioned returning players, Hadler also has a strong freshman class that might produce some varsity players who could help add depth to the roster.

Hadler sees St. Anthony’s strengths starting with its guard play and also includes outside shooting, speed and transition game. Size inside could be an issue.

St. Anthony opens the 2016-17 season this week with a pair of games. The Huskies host Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Nov. 29 and travel to Waconia on Dec. 2. Next week, St. Anthony hosts Trinity on Dec. 6 and South St. Paul on Dec. 9.

Other non-conference opponents on the schedule include St. Louis Park, Bloomington Jefferson, Chisago Lakes, Robbinsdale Cooper, Rush City and CHOF. The Huskies are also hosting a holiday tournament that includes Richfield, St. Croix Prep and Tartan.

St. Anthony opens conference play on Jan. 10 against DeLaSalle. The Huskies play teams from the Tri-Metro West (DeLaSalle, Fridley, Holy Angels, Brooklyn Center, Columbia Heights) once and teams from the East (Visitation, Concordia Academy, St. Croix Lutheran, St. Agnes) twice.
