Experience brings hope of improvement for MVHS girls hoops

With a young lineup, the Mounds View High School girls basketball team struggled after a fast start to the season a year ago. A good number of those players are back this season and that has the Mustangs looking for a turnaround.

A group of seven players return from last year’s team. Head coach Dave Montgomery, in his sixth season at the helm, has improvement as one of his top goals for this year’s squad.

“We want to build on our season from last year and continue to improve and come together as a team,” said Montgomery. “We have a lot of returning players and we are really excited for the season.”

Senior guard Erin Saemrow returns following back-to-back all-conference seasons. She averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game in 2015-16.

Guard Sophie Fixsen (six points per game) and forward Hannah Van Sickle are also returning seniors. Juniors on the roster with experience include guards Mia Wendt, Gretta Schmidt and Sara Wendt, who averaged 12 points per game. Freshman forward Lindsey Becher is also back after appearing in 23 games last. Becher averaged five points, seven rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game season as an eighth grader.

Montgomery expects the rest of the roster to include a number of younger players who should see plenty of varsity minutes.

“We are pretty fast and athletic,” Montgomery said. “We can get up and down the court and will need to look to score in transition.”

Size, or a lack thereof, is a concern but Montgomery hopes his team can find a way to use that to its advantage.

Mounds View opened the season over Thanksgiving weekend at the Pat Paterson Tournament at Hamline University. The Mustangs fell 65-52 to Kenyon-Wanamingo in the first round and 74-36 to Lakeville North on day two. Both opponents had winning records a year ago and Lakeville North was a Class AAAA state-tournament team.

The Mustangs are back in action twice this week, starting with a road non-conference game at Chisago Lakes on Nov. 29. They then play their home opener on Dec. 2 against St. Francis.

Mounds View hosts St. Paul Central on Dec. 6 before traveling to Forest Lake for its Suburban East Conference opener.

Montgomery expects most of the teams in the conference to be improved.

“Almost all teams in the conference will be stronger this year,” said Montgomery. “Very few had significant losses to graduation. White Bear Lake, Roseville and East Ridge will be the favorites to start with but it’s a really deep and talented conference this year.”
