Irondale/St. Anthony gets girls hockey season underway

The high school girls hockey season got going last week and Irondale/St. Anthony opened the campaign by jumping right into conference action. The Knights hosted Andover on the afternoon of Nov. 12 and suffered a 6-1 defeat.

Andover got things going early by scoring just 3:17 into the game. The Huskies would add two more tallies before the end of the first period.

If Irondale had any thoughts of a comeback, they were quickly squelched by an Andover goal only 24 seconds into the second period. The Huskies tacked on two more goals in the third.

Irondale avoided the shutout when Megan Lyke scored with 21 seconds left in the third period. India Charles and Emma Fagerlee picked up the assists.

Senior goalie Hannah Rupp started between the pipes for the Knights and made 18 saves in the loss.

Irondale managed only 10 shots on goal against Andover netminder Cassidy Stumo.

The Knights are busy this week with three games on the docket and two of them will involve some substantial bus time. Irondale goes after another Northwest Suburban Conference foe on Nov. 15 when it travels to Fogerty Arena to tangle with the Blaine Bengals.

After a couple of days of practice, it’ll be time to board the bus and trek north for a pair of weekend non-conference tilts. Irondale plays at Hibbing on Nov. 18 and will stop in the birthplace of Judy Garland on the way home on Nov. 19 to take on the Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning.
